Could someone do a no wind dance for me please! This is an actual action shot of 5 large Hawaiian Apple plants being broken in half by heavy winds from the north west. My plants are not used to the wind coming from that direction.

Just after they broke.

And after the emergency cleanup to remove some of them from our phone line.

Young fruit bunches.

So all you locals that want some really tall plants and large pups for free can come help me remove this stand this spring. I'm officially done growing tall bananas. In this wind I lost 2 bunches of young fruit and it looks like the last bunch standing will be coming down sometime tonight. The winds are supposed to be 70 mph tonight. Hopefully it doesn't break anything!

Really sorry to see that man. I hope all ends well. Denver is being punched by the NW right now. Raining hard and will soon turn into a huge snow storm >_<. Just let those winds come here, and may be the storm will move by faster!

That's really sad. The fencing clearly helps break the wind, protected everybody planted near it. Radar doesn't show much action going on over there, but apparently something is coming down from the north causing strong winds??
It's not their fault, poor plants!

That sucks. had one plant that twisted 75 deg in the soil. The plant was leaning N W, now almost east. Luckily I was outside and able to support it; I hope it holds for the night.

This caught me by surprise. It does happen this time of year but it's just slightly breezy and then....... bam
......what the heck is this? It's like super gusts that come out nowhere!
5 short power outages so far.

So sorry about that. That's sucks. My plumerias that are in 15-gallon containers have been blown over a bunch of times in the last few days, but there are only a few broken branches thankfully. It's usually windy this time of year. I'm just glad that there are no major fires being fueled. I'm sorry about your losses. I hope your plants will be all right.

I had a tall red that did the same thing. I propped it for months until a wind came from an odd drection and finished it off. The fruit still ripened and tasted great though!

Hey, at least you were able to get it some support. I guess this is a sign that tall bananas aren't in your near future, lol.

Dang...I'm sorry to hear about that! Wind isn't really my friend either (and definitely isn't the friend of bananas!). I would switch to a dwarf species and then you probably won't have these issues. Too bad, cause tall bananas are nice.

Someone must have done the dance just right because the winds mellowed out and no more bananas were lost last night! :)

Yeah, you see that patch of moderate/heavy snow on the map?! That's me. like 6 inches downtown already, and we usually get a bubble of less snow than the rest of the state :(

How long have you lived in Denver? My brother lives there and that place has the craziest weather patterns. Weather people have one of those wheel charts and they spin the wheel and were ever the pointer lands that's what they predict the weather will be. My brother would call me from being on his jet ski one day and then tell me its snowing the next...

Haha. I've been in the Denver area my entire life....And yeah weather tends to be really weird here. Yesterday it was about 60F and just a tad bit overcast, and currently it is 28F and snowing so much it's impossible to go do anything really. I remember last year there was a day that officially announced winter where it was 65F around noon, and -15F at about 11pm. That was fricken insane.

Momese,
The winds made it to San Diego this afternoon. Very gusty with dead calm breaks in between. Bad start to winter with every leaf shredded, but ony two Mona Lisa stalks folded. They are pretty slender.
It was an experience to be out among them when the gusts came. They really swaye d a lot, and the rustling leaves are pretty noisy. Seemed almost like being in a washing machine alternating between agitate and spin.
It is always a bummer when you lose a plant. Your pix were pretty heartbreaking.
I'm so sorry, that is hearbreaking. Beautiful Fruit :(

Bummer..so sorry to see this:-(
Guess that is why you dumped the Tall Reds...got all the Dwarf Brazilians you want;-)..although they are not really dwarf bananas..just a smaller version of the Brazilians.
Good news is think of all of the new varieties you can introduce (not what you want to hear right now), Rajapuri is short and stout.
We grow Tall Brazilians (Hawaiian apple); but only in the side yard between our house and our neighbors 35 foot tall three story windshield (which also creates a solar eclipse). The Sabas can withstand winds up to 50-60 mphs...the Brazilians...not so much.
Sorry for your loss...now you know how the Florida members feel after a near miss Hurricane.
Let us know what corms you are looking to introduce and good luck!!
Hang in there...luckily you thinned your mattes or it could have been worse...
If it is any consolation we considered dumping bananas from our yard in the mid to late nighties due to frosts and tropical storms....this is weather's reminder that we are sub-tropical and not "Tropical"...
Timeline of Florida Freezes - Florida Citrus Mutual (http://www.flcitrusmutual.com/industry-issues/weather/freeze_timeline.aspx)
1989 * This freeze occurred on December 22-26. This freeze was the fifth *impact freeze recorded in Florida history, however it was the second *impact freeze in a single decade, leaving growers little time to recover after the freezes of 1983 and 1985.
*Impact Freeze: a freeze so severe that it annihilates entire groves across the state, killing both mature and young citrus trees, while causing a profound economic impact on the citrus industry and usually prompting growers to replant farther south.

Thanks Chris. I already have Raja Puri and it does really good in the wind. Even the mid sized plants like Misi Luki and Pisang Klotek did fine so I'll probably replace the HA with something mid sized and leave the dwarfs in front of them.
