Bay laurel for sure:ha: The banana is kind of small to guess but the thinner leaves might be an orinoco. Hopefully someone with more experience will see it and help.

I know about the Bay Laurel, you smart-ass!!!

Yes, someone with some knowledge and expertise would be very much appreciated. So far, only clowns have responded!

Does this help in identifying it? This new huge leaf just opened up yesterday for me...

Very difficult to tell at this young stage and growing in indirect light. By mid-summer it might have enough traits showing to identify it, and when it blooms and fruits it will probably be an easy task.

Thanks, Richard:

I don't know - this thing is growing very rapidly, and even though it may look like it's not getting much light, it really is - it was just cloudy the day I took the shot.

I think it will be filled out long before Summer, at the rate it's growing. I only received it in the mail a little over a month ago! It came from Texas - from "ShearMe" actually.

When the sun is shining, this thing is saturated in rays from an East and South window, and it is just thriving. All my other banana plants are kind of dwindling along, but this one seems to love it here! I intend on putting it outside when it's warm enough in Spring.

Also, if it gets real dark, like it typically does over November and December, I can place this beauty under my bright metal halide light system, to get it through the dreary months of Fall and Winter.

I will post more peeks as it develops...

I got it from 'ShearMe' (Zac) in Texas, Matt. Here's how it looks this winter...

Was there any info you got with it? Such as type of fruit, general height, the original source? I have an idea but don't want to get your hopes up for an ID too soon.

The Hollyberry Lady

No unfortunately, there was no information nor label that came with the plant. Zac bought it from a nursery in Texas, and it was unidentified. Looking forward to finding out what it is...

Here it is now in my garden, but it took a very long time to adjust to outdoors after being inside for so long. It's just recently started to send out new leaves...

Looking forward to watching it grow more. That's an African Daisy Hybrid in front of the banana that will bloom soon.

Gotta invite Zac into this thread so he can see it too...

Oh yes, Zac...

It's definitely the same plant but since I put it in the ground it's been growing differently!

Just recently, the red stripe appeared on the leaves but before that it was green. Weird, eh? I kind of like it, whatever it is...

The banana........ Bonsai!:ha: Sorry had to say it Mrs. "small pot" Lady but it's looking vigorous and growing well.

The Hollyberry Lady

Thanks, Zac!

Guess what?! Today I noticed a small banana leaf at the base of your plant...you know what that means, don't you?

: o

Yup, pups. :goteam:

Furthermore, it's the very first pup I've ever had on any of my banana plants and it came from you, Zac! Thanks a bunch for being so kind to me back then when my stuff got stolen. You're a real sweetheart.

You too Bob, and even though I killed the Siam Ruby by accident (being the 'peel happy plant plucker' or whatever ridiculous name you called me :ha:), I still appreciated the kind gesture.

I'll show a shot of the new pup tomorrow but it just looks like a twisty curled banana leaf coming out of the soil near the base. This is new for me, but I'm so excited to raise a pup for the 1st time.

Yes Bob, those are my hybrid African Daisy flowers, grown from seed. They bloom best on sunny days and the leaves are extremely fragrant. I like the look of flowers to cover the sometimes unsightly bases of banana plants. Here's an up close shot of the beautiful blooms...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSCI3257.jpg

I fertilize my Geraniums weekly without fail (and no, not with Miracle Grow! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif ) and immeditely remove the spent blooms, stem and all.

If they are cared for properly, they should never ever be without tons of blooms on them constantly, without any interruption, not even one day. I told you how to care for them and deadhead them.

More shots soon...

I agree, some flowers should always accompany the base of any nanner. In my bed, though, a succulent is spreading and while technically it's a weed, it makes a nice ground cover and keeps out the "grass" we use in Texas.

:woohoonaner: PUPS!!!

That's pretty cool. I knew that plant would be a good one when I found the mini pup growing while washing the corm to ship to ya; to bad the dog dug it up one too many times and killed it. :(

The Hollyberry Lady
08-16-2010, 10:48 PM
Oh that's a nice idea too, Zac - growing a succulent. I really love the look of the flowers around the bottom.

Of course I will send a pup back to you, if you lost yours. Wouldn't see you without, Zac.

Bob, you'll have to instruct me on how to do this. I imagine you'll say not to cut it off until the Fall, so we'll see...

Maybe there'll be more pups soon! :goteam:

ShearMe

I wasn't expecting or asking for a replacement, and I'm running out of room for big plants anyways; another friend of yours would probably be a better destination. That being said, if you've no room for it and no one else wants it, I'd definitely rescue it.

As for shipping, it really doesn't matter when you ship or how, but bigger is always better. The size really only determines how quickly the corm will produce new roots and then begin putting out new leaves. That mini pup off yours (the size of a 25 cent piece; do you call those quarters in Canada too?) would have taken a month to come outa the ground, bob's maureli (about 1/2 a meter tall I think) took about 2 weeks for a leaf to come out.

The Hollyberry Lady
08-16-2010, 11:48 PM
Well, I have a feeling that there'll be many others very soon anyway and plenty of pups to share.

Yup, we call a quarter a "quarter" but we have a gold coin instead of a dollar bill and it's called a "Loonie" because of the picture of the Loon on it - not because we're all looney! :ha:

Looks like this...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/Loonie.jpg

A few years later they replaced the two dollar bill with the gold and silver coin called the "Toonie" for obvious reasons but shows our good senses of humor. :ha:

It's actually a really beautiful coin and it's bigger than the Loonie.

Here it is...

HBL, wait and dont be in any rush to cut the pups off, the bigger roots they have the better. We're not in Hawaii where they can get away with cutting them all off. There would be a slightly different technique cutting the pups depending on if you're planning on overwintering the mother plant or not... if you're going to save it get a sharp spade and just cut straight down and work around each pup trying to get as many roots as you can. If not whack the mother to the ground with a sharp shovel or knife and get as much of the parent plants corm and roots with the pups you're saving. This will add vigor to the new plants.

Well Zac, here it is today...

I'm sorry I didn't take a shot last evening just before I removed the leaves and dug it up out of my garden, but it was almost dark and there was no time to fool around...as they were calling for some serious frost last night.

It was one huge heavy stalk when I got it all cut back and out of the ground. As you can see by the pic, I left the pup intact, although it had some serious roots growing on it...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSCI3851.jpg

Last night when I hacked the top off, it was level, but today the new leaf I cut has already begun to push up...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSCI3852.jpg

Bob, what do you think??? :waving:

Should I remove the pup or keep it intact, and do you think it's possible that the mother could produce a flower at some point next season, if I keep it alive and well?

: )

I'll let Bob chime in, but I would leave it intact for the winter, Sherry. You can separate it when you put them in the ground in the spring.

The Hollyberry Lady
10-15-2010, 03:58 PM
I think I agree Howard, and on 2nd thought...Bob can keep his opinion out of this! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

Bob

Obviously you need all the help you can get... and then some but I'm not a shrink:ha:

Seriously , leave the pup on. It will strengthen the mother plant by staying attached to the corm and you can remove it in the spring when it would no doubt pup some more.

The Hollyberry Lady
10-23-2010, 02:46 AM
I'm definitely going to keep the pup intact...

but only because Howard said so! :ha:

The mother plant is already sending up new leaves! :goteam:

I didn't cut very much of the p-stem when I brought it inside because I was kind of enjoying how tall it was getting. Hope it might produce a flower next year because it's already over a year old!

The Hollyberry Lady

It's so huge that it was tough to fit it all in the picture because the p-stem is over three feet tall and it has two big pups at it's base. Here it is today with my Viente Cohol in behind it...

:ha: Very cool!

My first big leaf came randomly while inside just like yours, I guess it's all coincidence, but once I put it outside in the summer they just got bigger and bigger.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, the plants from this nursery tend to turn out great even if they're mislabeled. :08:

The Hollyberry Lady
11-30-2010, 12:08 AM
Zac, it's a tree!!!

I do love it though and would have to say it's one of my favorites actually. It just grows so beautifully here and likes London's weather a lot. It grew the best of all my outdoor banana plants, hands down, and it got the tallest too. :D

I am seriously hoping for a flower on it next year!!! :goteam:

In the recent pics I showed of it, it was on a tall stool because I was trying to keep the pups in good sunlight. I have since discovered a very sunny spot on the floor of my living room and I'm gonna set it down lower tomorrow.

Henry will no doubt be landing on the leaves because they are so large! I'll be sure to get a shot if he does. :ha:

I'd sure love to share a pup with ya in Spring Zac...if you want one that is? The two I have are growing beautifully but I'll only need the one, so let me know if you want a pup?

Might give Penny the 2nd one if she wants it...

Anyway, thanks again Zac! Who knew when you sent it that it would turn out so terrific! You're so nice to have bought it for me when my plants were stolen last year. I was really moved by your kindness and just think you're a very nice person to have done that for me. I love your plant so much. ;)

More like 'Very Huge'!!! :ha:

It's one giant tree but I love it, Zac. Can't wait to get it back in the ground in Spring and I'm hoping for a flower on it. It's already 1 & 1/2 years old!

It's become too large to shower in my bathtub so I mist the leaves with water and wipe them down with paper towel on the bottom & top. This will keep the mites away until I get it outdoors again where I won't have to worry about that.

I must say it's one of my most favorite banana plants because of how wonderfully it grows here. You sure picked a winner, Zac!
