We had snowfall this afternoon!
Okay, it can snow here, but not during day and not in March!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully this nightmare will be over by Thursday. Untill then .... who knows!
Yeah, it was main news today. Snowing in the Greece. :bananas_b
Cheers on that. The winter's been here for too long. I need warmth and sun!

Having survived the last frost, we can look forward for the spring to come....
In the next few days , Italy will be hit by an Atlantic perturbation that will carry a lot of rain but also a raise of temps with minimum well over 10°!
It's almosttime for the "big excavation" !!!!
Finally spring seems to be here!
We have sunshine and temperatures get higher every day. Today we reached 16 ° C and it'll be around 20 ° in the next days. The soil is still pretty cold after the cold in the last days, but should be warm enough soon, so growth can kick in!

Yeah, the "Ring of Fire" has been firy this year.
Pacific Ring of Fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ring_of_Fire)
Ten percent of the world's active volcanoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcano) are found in Japan, which lies in a zone of extreme crustal instability. They are formed by subduction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subduction) of the Pacific Plate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Plate) and the Philippine Sea Plate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Sea_Plate). As many as 1,500 earthquakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake) are recorded yearly, and magnitudes of four to six on the Richter scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale) are not uncommon.
I too feel sorry for those people,... it's sad. I can't even begin to imagine that - a country with extreme crustal instability and as many as 1500 earthquakes. I've been through 1 earthquake in my life, 5.1 RS.
This what happened in Japan is shocking indeed, Patty ...
Even I have Spring now. It is like the second warm and sunny day and almost all snow disappeared :goteam:

If the forecast will be confirmed in the next few hours , next thursday will be my " Massive plant day".
I plan to put the nanas outside and plant them in the ground, starting from the hardiest ones...
I think I'll leave inside only the G.M. the Nam Nom , the Dwarf Nino and the Veinte Cohol to spare them in the event of a sudden backlash of cooler air....
I've also a lot of other seedling to plant outside, like tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and the likes......

It finally reached 50F today. Its about time because we've had a pretty bad cold spell for the last 2 weeks, with a few snowstorms in that time period. I'm pretty sure everyone else in my area understands how bad this is when we are well into spring, and it still feels like winter while most other places are enjoying warmth.
Anyways I'm hoping to be able to uncover my 2 musa basjoos which have been dormant for 1/2 a year already by the beginning of June. Hopefully we don't get any June freezes, but anything is possible with a year like this one.

It finally broke the 20C mark today, and along with that, the maple buds are starting to open up so it is finally starting look like spring which should have happened 3-4 weeks ago, but there's lots of rain in the forecast, and these warm-ups have never lasted longer than 3 days, but I think this marks the end of winter-like weather.
Hopefully this La Nina weather pattern ends soon because I don't like it being consistently colder than avg, being cloudy, and raining or snowing all the time. 2010 was perhaps one of the best summers because we actually had extended periods of warm temperatures and sunshine.
We had a sunny, but cold Easter weekend and also the time before was too cold for this time of the year. But still no summer in sight...

Still though, the weather in Pyrgos was great(although again below average) during the Easter holidays with 25C highs daily and minimums around 16C. In Melissia,it was another story, with highs lower than 16C and lows below 10C probably. We are now having cool rainy weather with highs around 12C that is predicted to last till Friday. Well - as you have some other non-europeans posting I thought I would butt in! We are currently under hurricane watch for tomorrow and have cut all the fruit off the bananas - most of the bunches were huge and the ones that lay on the roof definitly had to go! Yes, it does look nice there. I am amazed at the many places in this world that people grow tropicals. Rain also is an issue with us on occasion as the grass doesnot grow and the cattle have to eat hay. Will you take the banana in when it gets cold? I haven't seen the sun in 9 days. Literally. It's quite warm for this time of the year, no frost so far (fortunatelly, because I had no time to go about the autumn garden preparation...). heavy cloud covers and above freezing temps. Ideal for bacteria and consequent illnesses.
And it's nice to be back. Ante, I haven't forgotten about you. :)
It's surprising, but the worms seem to be still living. :D
After not feeding them in1 month and leaving them in 10+ temperatures, they thrive. Strange.

We had first frosty night at 16th October this year, so is quiet normal whereas non-frost period in this part of the country lasts from 15th May to 15th October, so it is 5 months for growing exotic plants.
that is the map of hardiness zones for Poland, as you can see the warmest and the coldest regions are in the north.

Sloes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloe) are kind of wild plums, The fruits lose tart tast after freezing, then are collected.
Sloe berries are popular here to produce sloe vodka (tincture), snaps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snaps) or wine
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/189/img9249j.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/600/img9249j.jpg/)http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/5451/img9261y.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/img9261y.jpg/)
Homemade fruit and herbal tinctures are very popular in Poland, you can prepare it with almost every kind of fruits.
the most populare is cornel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Cornel), green walnut, raspberry, cranberry and of course herbs like buffalo grass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Żubrówka) or wamwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piołunówka) :08:
