Btw, Rick, my weather sticker for Roma, Italia says it was 5°C today very early in the morning. The weather station is on the other side of Rome than you, so the sea moderates your temps slightly, but anyways, isn't that a lil bit too low? :lurk:

Hi there.
yes, the sea raises temps at least 2 or 3 ° more than Rome but today it's pretty chilly here.... my weather station said 7° at 6.30 am.
I saw on TV the artic front moving toward east but a cold stream flanked Alpes from the French side and pushed cold air on the Tirrenian side of Italy.....
It's better than expected from two days ago forecast, but it's still pretty cold for Rome's average weather in this period none the less...
Luckily today i can see the sun so the temps should rise quickly.

Anyway, Northern Rome and Southern Rome could be two entirely different cities in weather terms.....
There's big difference in temps , sun and rain and wind....
I've parents in the northern part of Rome and it's funny when we talk by phone to hear that it's raining and cold there while here it's sunny and hot !

Thought so. It's the same here.
Lots of snow, bad winds in the north and sunny, slightly warmer with rain just 15 clicks to the south. :08:
Still quite warm over here. It seems that that arctic cold, that is now in Central Europe and south of the Alps in some parts, won't get down to us.
Even though temperatures have dropped a little and there has been some rain. Today's high was "only" 16° C and the low was 8° C. That's about 2 -3 degrees less than before.
Mean temp for November this year is still 4.7° C higher than average. And only 5 days left for the month, I guess that this will be one of the warmest Novembers ever recorded here.
The forecast for the next 7 days is quite warm. Untill the weekend 15 -17° C and then up to 20° C and lows around 8 - 10° C.

Theoretically it is possible, but snow should melt immediately or it was snow + rain.
I had first snow this year as well, but just couple flakes dropped this morning.

Seriously we have -14,5 C now :(
Hi guys,
I might be in the only warm spot in Europe. We still have almost 20° C during the day, yesterday it was almost 25° C.
The current depression over Europe is "sucking" warm air from Africa across the sea towards us, while the rest of Europe is flooded by cold air from the north.
But anyway, it's very unuasual to have such a warm weather here at this time of the year. November was 4.7 ° C (8° F) warmer than mean temperature this month (11° C/52° F average vs. 15.7°/60° F C in 2010).
I don't need to say that my nanners outside are stil growing. Slowly, but steady. It took about two weeks, but my Rajapuri is just unfolding another leaf. And the small pup is also still growing.

Global warming is measured on a very long term basis and the results are combined from all over the world. So even if it's exceptionally cold in Europe, it might be extremely hot somewhere else...
You know what I mean.
An excellent educational series about the global warming (by potholer54) can be found here (it's quite a long series, but full of quality information which can be traced to actual scientific articles)... first part:
YouTube - 1. Climate Change -- the scientific debate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52KLGqDSAjo)
I really advise to watch it, some very interesting stuff. From a scientific point of view with all the sources and peer-reviewed articles about climatic trends. Not some "see from the window" science. ;) :08:

Well, I am not sure what you are driving at but I actually like my country, even if there are more beautiful, reacher and WARMER!!! countries in the world.
I am starting to reconcile with the fact I can't grow here all plants I would like.
If I have to move I would rather move to some warmer land like Silesia or Pomerania.
I had Mediterranean's plant fascination about 2 years ago then I had had Trachycarpus, Beschorneria, evergreen oaks, eucalyptuses, Pittosporum, Arbutus uneo, Lurus nobilis and many other exotic plants in there garden, I built complicated winter protection for them, but after two winters I realized I can't make Italy or Croatia in Poland - it doesn't make sense. I still have the most hardy of them :
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55088445@N08/5207487030/" title="IMG_5077 by sevrozt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5207487030_67c14a2763.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="IMG_5077" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55088445@N08/5207499486/" title="IMG_5147 by sevrozt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5289/5207499486_596d2a54b6.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="IMG_5147" /></a>
but I think bananas are better then palms - they grow fast and are quite easy to overwintering at home.

Hi there. No damage on 'nanas here..... but the only nanas I've left outside unprotected ares a Basjoo and the Comune di Sicilia who survived without problems... all the others are sheltered by plastic layers like a small personal greenhouse...
And the strange thing is that even if the greenhouse are home made the nanas seems to apreciate it very much.... Thousand fingers, D.C., S.D.C. , Gran Nain and Musella Lasiocarpa are still actively growing even if the sprout a new leaf every 20 days more or less....
I know that the worst has yet to come in term of cold but for the moment can't complain....
My Thousand finger has grown so big inside the greenhouse that the leaves are becoming twisted because the push against greenhouse perimeter and every new cigar leaf almost pierce the roof layer.... LOL

I dont have any greenhouse for bigger plants now. I did improvise a kind of half-shalter for few plants and all potted ones are under the deck so they cant get frost. 75% of them is allready dormant. No damadge yet but the lowest temp. so fare was 6.4C and thats unusually high considering the date.
Its going to be wet but plesant week now (about 15C) and than the big cooldown for weekend with frost possibiles and temps arround 0.

Same here, strong winds and f...ing cold. Already 2 ° C /36 F now (9:50 p.m.) and we also might get frost tonight. The same applies for the next days - even down to - 3° C/26 F is forecasted. At least the wind shall become calm by tomorrow night. The highest gust was 55 km/h / 34 mph, that's 7 Beaufort!
We'll see how my Rajapuri will look like tomorrow. It's unprotected. The leaves are already shredded, so they "just" can get injured by the cold...

the cold front hit hard the italian peninsula.... luckily Rome was sheltered a bit by Appennines mountains but we get near zero ° none the less.
My 'nanas outside bore the blunt fairly well except for the Thousand fingers who got the leaves a little toasted by the chill even if it was under its personal greenhouse... the leaves turned partially or totally brownish... not dry for for the moment but they didn't like the weather at all.
The SDC and DC seemed to stand better than T.F. thaat cold wave with no visual signal of damage....for the moment..
I looked at the weather forecast a few minutes ago and I got shivers down my spine... Tuesday will bring siberian frost and minimum should reache -2° that it's a rare event here in Rome in December.
Come on Ante I begged you to keep that cold in your zone... please Jack do your part too... I really can't stand a -2° temp... it's a genetic matter...

- 0.9 ° C so far here. The strong wind has stopped suddenly about an hour ago and now the temperature is going down rapidly. We expect - 3 ° tonight. Last night was - 0.3 °C
I added a heating cable with a temperature switch to my greenhouse. The temperature stays at around 10 ° C in there. Today it reached 25 ° C in full sunlight without the heating cable, which turns off at 12 ° C and with strong wind!
My Rajapuri and my California Gold outside in the ground still look green, but with shredded leaves from the wind. We'll see how they look tomorrow morning. They're still unprotected except for the mulch.
Wed/Thur there shall be snow and much lower temperatures...

We had -13,5C last night, the lowest temperature so far was -17,3C.
I have two thermometers with memory located in 2 different places in the garden to get quiet reliable results of measurement.
These temperatures are for my home town Józefów where I have a garden but I work and live also in Zamość (40km North) where is usually a little bit colder.
Although this is one of the coldest regions in Poland (winter) we have very hot summers.

Max and min. temperatures in Poland:

+40,2°C in Pruszków 29th July 1921
Wow, I didn't know there are places for skiing in Greece... but I think I would definitely chose beach.
Yeah, it's not very known that there are ski resorts here and they're very small - compared to the ones in the alps, but at least one could go skiing here and it's not very expensive.
It's a bit strange if you know greek beach bars/tavernas, because it's the same thing here in the mountains at the resorts. The only difference is that fresh fish is not that reguarly offered there and the spirits sold are also the local homemade types, but they do taste good and warm up you're body on a cold day :bananas_b

Ok guys , things got officially ridiculous !
-4° in Rome ? In December ? It must be a joke..... I do not remember such an occurance....
Today I woke up to find that my hot water's pipe was frozen because it ran on the roof to join the thermic solar device.
For a moment I thought I was in Alpes in a place like San Candido or Bad Gastain....
My basjoo that was unprotected got a big toast... the Orinoco hold a little better but effects could be seen in a near future..... I didn't have the courage to look after D.C. and Thousand fingers inside their nursery...
The last few days were the worst weather I remember since I was I child.... Last year in February we had snow, it's true... but temps were somewhat above zero.... not -4°

Hold in there pal. And while you are at it and can't remember that it was this cold, look up the year 1985. ;)
It was so cold then, that vast majority of citron trees in the south actually froze, while the north was scorched by blizzards and cold never seen before.

OK, they survived several lows of -14°C, lots of snow, frost and water, when it all started melting and now the same again. And most of them live. Damaged, but live. I didn't get deep enough to find those in the ground, but I guess the situation is the same. More to that. All those palms outside were in pots, so that's another advantage. 2 so far. But if they continue doing as well as they are, I will plant all the others inground as well. To my garden, city property and give some to my neighbours to plant. It will be a paradise in 10 or so years. ;)
Now what other palms are resilient enough to withstand the cold. I would say that sabals are worth the try, some other Trachy types... any advice? Nannorrhops maybe, jubaea of course... butia maybe... We'll see. Jubaeas are difficult to germinate. I can't seem to find the proper way of germinating them. None of the advice that works for others works for me. :(

We had an honest to goodness blizzard last night! Maybe 20 or so inches of snow and some towns nearby got close to 30". There were 50 mile an hour gusts and sustained high winds all night long ( it's been blowing for days now). The Ensete tent is ripped and bent over so I assume that's dead.... what can you do? 'Tis the season.:ha:

Use the snow to bury your ensete Bob...it's a great insulater & I'll bet you can save it. Just keep piling it on.

Beside two T. fortunei, I have a small Nannorrhops outside (the green form), without any kind of protection. I`m wondering if it will survive. A gardener told me that coldness wouldn`t be a problem for it as long as you keep it dry. I don`t think it is dry enough as it is snowing/melting/snowing all the time  ...so we`ll see. ;)
As far as I remember, Butia eriospatha is said to be a better candidate for a wet and cold climate than B. capitata. Maybe it`s worth a try. :)
I'm freezing in Munich, Germany at the moment.
My nanners in Greece stayed warm so far and no big cold is expected so far, but little freezes during nights are possible at the end of this week/beginning of next year.
I hope you had all a Wonderful Christmas!

We've had snow for weeks and I'm sick of it. It was super cold today when I was out and tonight we're sitting at -10°C...14°F with windchill. Glad I'm in for the night.

Today we had 2° of minimum temp so my 'nanas didn't get a "below zero" experience as expected by forecast.... I hope that the african high I saw yesterday at the edge of my country will spare us the worst I see coming from North....

We've also been having cold temps, especially at night in the low 20's F, and windy, with gusts yesterday of 44 mph. My palms look OK, but we all know that cold damage won't show frequently until the spring. Fingers are crossed for all of us!

Is there someone still alive in Genoa ? I though everyone was drowned from rain and snow all over northern Italy.....
Italians says that Liguria is Italy's W.C. (that's a joke of course) beacuse of the total amount of rain per year that is much higher that the rest of italian regions....:ha:

Yes, it's beautiful..... I served in the Navy in Liguria and there are delightful places like "5 terre" and the likes but it's really rainy down there...
Yesterday on the TV NEWS there was hthe count of how many ligurian town and small cities were cut off by mud avalanches cauded by rain and it was really inpressive....
