Out of the varieties that I have I would have to say that Gran Nain is rather prolific. I read somewhere that Apparently diploid AA's pup the most and then it goes down depending on how many B's you have in the genetic makeup of the plant. I don't know if I buy it completley because my Dwarf Namwahs have outpupped my misi lukis by a longshot as well as the Kandrians. But I have a ring of pups around my gran nains which reminds me of all the upcoming work I have to do.

Rhino Horn had about 100 the first cycle. They really only developed after the parent flowered, however. Came up like weeds, pups, and pups on the pups all at the same time.

Ones that have been killed to the ground by winter freezing. Not what I plan for, but it happens anyways. Don't know that it counts, but Pete whacked back his Ensente maurelii and got a few hundred pups off of it!

Here is one pup a little later which is only about 10" tall, and already has a pup forming on it.
http://webebananas.com/bpix/BP940-34.jpg
Actually it had 2 pups forming, and many of the pups had pups, and "grand"pups, already forming.

Dwarf cavs and orinocos. One ori has 5 sword suckers and 4 water suckers on it. Most of the DCs have, on average, 5 pups.

I thought about it Harvey, but that doesn't seem to be most peoples experience with them. Besides, I really had to coax those pups along!

In my collection the Hua Moa has always been the biggest pupper. Two years ago had 14 around the single pstem and 2 were pups on pups as Jon called it. They slide up the side of the older pup facing the mama. This year the HM mat has 2 mama pstems - we'll see what pups pop if it ever gets warm again here in S Fla.
If I had some of that Kickapoo Joy Juice that Brian uses I would be in pup city.

I bet its a root stimulator of sorts. I know when I use that stuff on an established nanner it just craps pups ( I'm not kidding either :^) ....

Really, I never knew root stimulator would do that. I've just been feeding them the Banana fuel.

Dean --- PM Brian NANAMAN on the Kickapoo Joy Juice. It's a root stimulator/hormone kinda stuff. Search his posts on the Ae Ae pup production project he's doing with Greenie.
Meanwhile, I'm more concerned with directing the mats energy into fruit production, not pup production. My crazy Hua Moa just overpups compared to the others -- no matter what I do.

Is there anyway to make bananas pup more?I see dwarf varieties don't pup that much though the taller varieties pup a lot.

Doesn't the size of the corm have something to do with the amount of pups?

I hate to say this, but I don't believe that statement to be true whatsoever. I think Tony is all over it in that: Its all about the corm size/density, and what you feed the banana big or small. I had one pup on a Blue Java none on the other, 1 on a ARH, 1 on PC, 0 on a Pineapple, 3 on a Gran nain, 2 on Raja Puri, 8 on an SDC, 10 on both Dc's, 0 on Dwarf Orinoco. Once your banana reaches 3-4 ft if you feed it root stimulator you'll be pupping like crazy; expanding your inventory of banana plants & not growing much for fruit. A Root stimulator early on will help get your banana get root strong and enhances the size of the corm of a small banana :^)

You had quite alot of pups but I have a question. What consists of a mat?

What consists of a mat???
I sure found out when I dug up, by hand, both my giants --- the Saba and Pitogo. As in the movie Fourth of July, I like to think of a mat as the Mothership - the corm - sprouting all the spaceships - the pstems - around its surface.
With bananas though, the mama corm gets bigger and bigger each year.
Almost busted a gut digging out that Saba - had to chop it in sections to get it all out. Used the Pitango digging bar - thanks Jon. The Pitogo was a little smaller but still massive. And they were only 3 years old. A 10 year old mat needs a backhoe!!!
Side note ---- threw the corm chunks in the empty lot next door and now have Saba and Pitogo pups sprouting from each and every one. No watering, no fert and no planting in ground. Amazing.

Now that sounds like a good workout & challenge :^) Thanks for the insight :^)

Well last year I used root stimulator on certain plants. I believe Dave is using it now to strengthen his root system and make pups so his plants are stronger but are distracted until next year to flower. I got 6 pups off a 3ft namwah and when I potted it for the winter it had 3 and another came up. I mixed it with water and applied daily in the heat of summer. I'm sure others can be manipulated to pup as much, more than usual, or pup that fast naturally, like a DC. :^)

My dwarfs seem to pup the most for me. But I did get a pup on my ice cream banana at a pretty small size. My basjoos are getting some serious growth right now and Im expecting some pups soon (3 leaves in 2 weeks and the leaves are getting HUGE)

My basjoo has given me 25 pups this year, and more are still coming! Lasiocarpa-1, Orinoco-2, and another basjoo that was a pup separated and planted last year-5, Velutina-1, Siam Ruby-3.
