I don't really think it's sad what happened. Australia has done a good job in preventing the introduction of many diseases in what may appear to be extreme measures, but I think it's worth it in the long run. I wish there were some photos to go along with this story, or a video. I wonder what she looked like going around with bananas in her underwear.

Wow...10 years in jail and a $66,000 fine!? That's no laughing matter!

As Harvey said, Australia is Verrrry strict.

Back in the day, I used to belong to an online group that traded plants and such. Back then you didn't need an import permit. One of the group members who lived in Australia sent some boxes of plants, but requested that people not send any in return.
One lady didn't listen and sent her a box full of plants and cuttings- without telling her first.
When the Australian lady got home from work, she found a bunch of Feds and the box of plants- got accused of smuggling, etc.
Boy, I'll never forget how mad she was! Practically burned your eyeballs out trying to read that email.

I think many of us have tried to take some plant from some where. In the 80's I took three baby Rattle snakes on a plane from California to New York. They were 7 inches long. I got them from a friend. This was when I collected reptiles. Yes I know I'm crazy! Most of you are too with all your plants. :)

How could that lady even walk with three banana plants in her underwear?
