My clump got set back this year for some reason and only got about half its normal height of about 10-12'. I think I cut too many divisions off the mat last year and then the coldest/wettest winter I have seen in 5 years didn't help!!!! I have not touched it this year and will apply extra mulch and hopefully it will bounce back next summer!!!

Randy, are you saying your velutinas normally are 20'??? Or are you saying it was twice as small, cause I thought it only reached 6-12' but that's only what I heard, I'll see for myself when I grow them (that'll be fun!!):woohoonaner:

Here's mine Cheryl. It looks a lot like yours without the pup. Can't come close to Austin's beauties, but I still like it!

That doesn't look like Musa dasycarpa to me. M. dasycarpa has no wax on the pseudostem at all, and is a mostly green pseudostem.

Here's a few pics I took the other day at the UT Gardens. Sorry for the blurry overall shot.

Wow....just realized that Randy and Frank are two separate people. I mean, I've seen the names and knew they were different, but their avatars are so similar it seems I've been confusing the two for ages!!! What a situation!

Frank what do you think it is? I'm no expert for sure and have to rely on whatever the person that I got it from tells me it is. This one was an eBay purchase coming from Louisiana. It was a stub when I got it this past summer, but there was lot of peachy pink on the pstem. ??????

Bryan, you do reaalize that if we were one in the same, my mom would not be around anymore...:0493: She would have commited suicide for bringing such an UGLY baby into this world!!!! :0517::banana_pi:guitarris

Got 'cha, FRANK!!!

Seriously though, Frank and I are good friends and I would do anything for him and I know he feels the same. We are only about an hour away from each other. Great guy and one of my mentors!!! Thanks for confusing us!!! Don't think Frank would feel the same, but I am flattered!!! LOL

One other thing that I just thought of that I think is pretty cool!!!! All the bananas you see of Austin and Frank and I are all from the same mat!!!! This mat of velutina is getting around, huh!?!?! Hope there will be some more folks on here that have some from the same mat as I know there are quite a few out there!!! Kinda start a pic gallery of their family "tree" !!!

LOL...think it was the fact that you both are Mods and both had virtually identical avatars. Things are MUCH clearer now that the avatars are different!! Glad to hear you two are such great friends!

How precious is that?!!!!! :o

Cheryl do yours have that beautiful peachy pink when they are young and loose it as they get older? Frank says mine doesn't look right, so I don't really know what I have now.

A lot of pups have that pink-reddish color when they first emerge. Musa basjoo, M. velutina, M. yunnanensis, M. itinerans, M. velutina, and others do the same thing. What I haven't quite figured out is why some emerge with that color, and others emerge green. What I have noticed is that the ones that DO emerge with a reddish color tend to be very vigorous sword pups.

My M. dasycarpa mat (matte?) has flowered twice this year. For some reason, the little bananas never seem to last too long and I've never had mine split open. Mine tend to dry out and turn dark before that ever happens. Great little ornamental, though.

It rained yesterday, and I think that's when they started to burst open. I probably caught them the day after. They are indeed stunning! I had to take a few pics of them to share with you guys. My favorite banana!

Maybe provide the plants with more regular waterings. That may help you get some nice, plump pink bananas.

Cheryl: Your plants are looking great! Keep them growing as it cools down.
