Edible bananas are seedless and do not need pollination (eventhough they do have both male and female flowers, only one type is open at a time--I do not know how long the female flower is able to accept pollen). But, based on what Jack said, seeded varieties like Basjoo do need pollination, but they pup together and will bloom pretty close to the same time.
