Default Overwintering Bananas

MY BANANAS HAVE BEEN ALL BEEN PURCHASED FROM JUSTFRUITANDEXOTICS.COM IN CRAWFORDVILLE, FLORIDA (ZONE 8B).

THE NURSERY ADVISES CUTTING THE WHOLE PLANT OFF AT THE GROUND AFTER THE FIRST FROST AND APPLYING A HEAVY LAYER OF MULCH -- ABOUT 10 INCHES.

DURING OUR (INFREQUENT AND SHORT) FREEZES THE MULCH IS PULLED OVER THE STUMPS TO PROTECT THEM; DURING THE REST OF THE TIME IT IS PULLED BACK FROM THE STUMP TO PREVENT ROOT ROT.

HAS ANYONE TRIED THIS METHOD? IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT LESS WORK THAN DIGGING THEM ALL UP AND MOVING THEM, AND IS RECOMMENDED FOR ZONES 8 AND ABOVE.
