Mike- I bought mine from the Smithsonian when I was there in the Summer of 03. I paid 27.95. Other banana books, hmm, paging Gabe.

On Amaryllis, I have Hippeastrum x johnstonii which is a hardy red one outdoors year round. Not sure where you could get VFTs....Maybe ebay?
