How cold do you think it might get in your garage? If it wont get down to freezing maybe I would try not cutting them back at all and see what happens. You could always trim any damaged portions later.Maybe you could add some supplemental heat with a cheap electric heater just enough to take the edge off if you're really concerned...... Guess it depends how crazy you want to get. One thing I would advise would be getting them of the direct cold of the floor maybe with a palette or a piece of foam insulation.
