I've had worse off plants root fine, though they may take longer. In my experience, actually having roots on the pup is not very important, whats more important is that its old enough to be able to make more roots (since it can't very well use the ones you just ripped out of the ground, it has to grow new ones anyways. Plus, bare-rooting suckers is common practice and will not kill the plant). Never give up on a banana plant, better to let it sit for months if you really want the variety than to toss it because you think its dead. Keep whatever its potted in slightly moist and in a warm location, it may surprise you.
