Happy to have a fellow Illini here. Your praying hands is ok. It is probably seeking some nitrogen from the lower leaves. But some browning is normal on the lower leaves. How much and how often have you fertilized it? What is the N-P-K composition of your fertilizer?
As for the pot size, use the biggest one you can move inside for the winter. The roots don't go too deep, but they will grow out fairly wide - up to about 10 feet. 1/2 a wine barrel would be ideal, but you will need something to move it in the fall.
