Not sure if they originated in Hawaii or not, but the story goes that they were reserved for eating only by Hawaiin royalty "back in the day". They are difficult to propagate and remain rare to this day. Check out the photo gallery and you'll find several pictures under the Variegated section. It is a fruiting banana. It can either be cooked or eaten raw if allowed to fully ripen.
