I think the correct name is Drimiopsis maculata. I have had this for years and its quite common here in North Florida, not rare at all. Its a South African bulb. I have it naturalized in my yard, its hardy in zone 8B-9A. Goes dormant in winter then comes back like gangbusters in Spring.

It also goes by the name "Speckled Lily". There are a few different species in widespread cultivation here in the USA. This one, and one that has longer leaves and less spotting are available at box stores sometimes. It has also been "passed off" sometimes as a Bonsai plant (in reality, it is a dwarf lily and never gets bigger than about 7-8" tall at the most)

Sorry, don't mean this the way it sounded, not trying to dispute the "rare" claim. Its probably a regional thing. It may be rare in some spots, not rare in others.
