Those are some skinny basjoo plants. I'd put a little bamboo stake next to them and tie them loosely, until they thicken up a little bit. I don't have any here that are that skinny.
It doesn't matter where you buy your basjoo from geographically speaking. All the tc's usually come out of Florida (or China via Florida in my case) and they are pretty much identical.
Most likely the tc'd plants you purchase in Minnesota will be the same genetic plants that you pick up on vacation in Florida.
In the picture, my basjoo was about 3 years old in that picture. It's about 5 years or maybe 6 now. It's already up over three feet tall this year, even though it was being over run by bamboo. BTW it seems just hacking some of the stems of the bamboo off even with the ground from around the banana worked, it's growing faster now and has 3 more pups coming up.
