Re: Yes, We Will Have No Bananas
After reading this article and seeing other similar articles, videos from Jamaican banana growers, etc., it occurred to me that we have a collective, grassroots voice here at Bananas.org
As the largest banana-specific forum on the internet, there is something we can do. Whether it be through petition, public service announcements or other means, perhaps a combination - we can bring this issue to the forefront. Not just here in the USA, but around the world. Let's make the facts known, become proactive and not reactive in our efforts. We should be reaching out to expand our membership to include banana geneticists, botanists, horticulturists, experts in banana pathogens, students doing banana research in colleges and universities.
A small effort on everyones part would result in enormous benefits towards public awareness of the issues facing the banana industry. The side benefits of this will be the inclusion of experts to the forum that are involved in banana improvement, pathogen research, etc. all of which will foster our own awareness and knowledge of bananas.
Make no mistake, I am not advocating revolution or upheaval, rather the simple concept that 99% of the public has no idea how the bananas arrive in the grocery store, nor do they know the challenges facing the industry now and in the future. Apathy is what drives and feeds the ability of 2 companies to monopolize this industry. Information and public awareness are the keys that will drive change.
Let's get our creative minds together on this and see what develops. Jarred may want to make this a new sticky thread if there is enough input from everyone. It would be great to hear what EVERYONE has to say. Get your creative juices flowing!!!!
