any fert would be better than none, but like you said you dont want to hurt them so i would do maybe 1/4 of the dose to start with every month, then if they take that ok "slowly" increase the dose to 1/2 strength and so on but give it time, i start mine right off the bat with fert but when they are young you can burn them out in a hurry!!!!! start off slow then you wont have a problem....both plants you have are super hardy in my experience, so you should do fine....
