I grow Selenocereus megalanthus, but I also live in its native range. You can probably get away with them in Simi, but they'll take longer to ripen. I'm with Richard - check out the red dragonfruits, they'll do better in your area.

Guavas are supremely easy to grow and will do fine for you; you'll find that your fruit has a finer taste if you just slightly waterstarve the plant after it setts. This mimics the conditions of the dry season in the tropics and forces the plant to concentrate the compounds in the guava, making it more intensely flavourful. I get two crops off of my bushes, a wet and a dry one, and the dry one without a doubt is the better tasting of the two. It's also the one that sells for higher prices at market.
