You can always try, at the end of the season, digging that stem with the banana bloom on it and potting it to keep somewhere where it won't freeze (basement). That stem will die from blooming anyway. I had a plant in a pot that had bananas on it at the end of the season, moved it into a basement, back out in the Spring and had ripe bananas.
