Question Why is there so many worms in my yard?

I know this is a bit of a weird question but Iíve always wanted to ask..... Last year when I was digging up the backyard for my plants I noticed tons of yucky earthworms and other worms in the soil. Why would there be so many? What exactly do worms do for the soil or your plants like Iíve seen mentioned before? Ideas? Thoughts? Thanks in advance as always!
