Cool How do you know if a banana plant is actually dead?

I have a couple of plants that seem to have died back to the soil line. How in the world do you actually know for sure if the plants are dead, going to regrow the pstem or just just push out some pups instead of the original plant? How do you know when to give up and just throw the plant in the garbage dump?! Thanks in advance. In case anyone asks I might be posting some pictures for this thread...
