Hi,
I don't believe what you describe to be a pup, rather it sounds like a choke. Search for that on here and see what you can find.. I believe you can take some steps to save the plant, but I don't have the expertise myself to walk you through it. Also, planting in uncomposted manure can cause some issues as well. I assume you are talking about composted manure, but not sure as you didn't specify. There are many smart people on here, im sure someone has some answers for you!
