Well, you can obtain the plastic tubes that are used to store tennis balls. Just cut out one end, remove the cap on the other and insert like a sleeve. Then secure the plastic tube over the pseudostem, and you can do it several ways. The tube is transparent, and rigid for your needs. It is long enough to prevent the initial shredding. Use more tubes if you need. by joining them end to end taped on a couple of long bamboo sticks.
