Many forum members dig their plants up in the fall and store them for the winter.

Some forum members store them bare root or in pots in basements and cool garages.
Winters in the northern zones are 5-7 months and plants are replanted outdoors when it warms up.

Here is an good example Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter
