They are probably saved as whatever they were when uploaded, would need to run some tests, cant remember.
Not sure why your browser tries to convert them but as far as the first and only one that I just tried on from the photo gallery, I got prompted to save the photo as a JPEG.
Some people like different browsers for different reasons, maybe you should evaluate other browsers if yours is giving you a wacky experience..
