If it is truly granular then apply it to the surface, mixing in with mulch (I recommend 1/4" orchid bark). If it is intended as a water soluble (dehydrated to the granularity of table salt), then always mix with water before applying.

In my opinion, 10-20-10 is a poor choice for bananas, but the 15-5-10 would be fine. Following the manufacturer's directions are best. Which 15-5-10 product are you considering?
