As mark said; The bigger the pot the better. If you could put it in a large pot, let the rootmass grow big, and then put it outside in late march you would have a major advantage. That hot CA sun will make leaves transpire water fast, and having a large rootsystem would make the "weaning off" easier. It's almost guaranteed that the sun will scorch the leaves, but new, suntolerant leaves will grow out fast!!
