So -if I understand correctly. You have mats in the backyard and frontyard and the pstems are alike - except one gets much taller? Are the mats pstems the same age and receive same water/sun/fert? Looks like mat in the 1st pic needs thinning - should be lots of pups - if you get good roots from the motherplant why not do that?
You say the nanas overwinter fine -do you mean they freeze and comeback in spring?
