I am in the same boat as you. I have my plants in pots. Then late fall I will bring them into the garage. My problem comes if the plant is too tall. The header on my garage is only 7 feet. So I still may need to dig some up. If I do need to dig up some plants I will wrap the root ball with landscapers cloth and prop the plant up inside. Then come spring replant again in the ground or in the pot.
