Yes, see my thread here on bananas.org from last year "Oriole bird nest under banana leaf". Sorry cannot copy the link to it here, because I am posting from my phone.
I think that the "white strings" you are referring to, are filifera filament fibers from the Washingtonia Palm tree which is also called a Mexican Palm here in Southern California. The Orioles are weaving it into the banana leaves with their beaks. Have witnessed it several times again the past 3 month.
