I'm still a noob but as for suggestions on what to improve on: soil. It's hard to tell just from the photos, but your soil looks sad to me. Bananas are heavy feeders, and benefit from generous amounts of compost and organic matter. Some of the most successful banana mats I've seen are basically growing out of a giant compost pile and it's my understanding that you can pretty much pile as much on as you want. If I were you I would expand that edging circle a bit and get yourself some yummy composted material and pile it on about 6-8" all around.
