That looks like one of the cold-hardy types...probably A. arguta, right? They must always stay moist...never dry out at all or they will quickly die. They also are not fond of heat. Being in zone 9 you might be better off with A. deliciosa.
There's a lot of good info here...but keep in mind it is written for the Oregon area where they grow the cold hardy arguta varieties commercially.
