Default Basjoo leaves question

What is the reason for cutting off the leaves on a basjoo after they are killed by a frost. Is it only because of looks or is there anothr more important reason. The leaves on my Basjoo are all brown and limp and are hanging over the p-stem. Just wondering if they would help protect the stem a little form the cold the way they are hanging.
