Boric Acid is not very poisonous. I guess, if the little critters ate enough of it, they would die. It works because like diatomaceous earth, it's an abrasive to their little bodies, and dehydrates them. Maybe this happens when they are learning to seperate the sugar from the mix? It works on contact(carrying, walking through, etc.). The sugar is used to attract them.
