The $25/acre is the assessment paid to the drainage district to maintain a certain water table. It pays a guy to turn a pump on when the water level is too high, open the flood gate when the water is too low, keep the canals free of weeds, and occasionally rent a backhoe to clean the silt out of the canals. It also pays for maintenance and operation on all the flood control structures. There are about 4000 acres in the drainage district. I think I probably spend about $250/acre/yr on fertilizer. I am the labor, and on average I probably spend about 10hrs week at the farm.
