Where did this plant come from?

I'm by no means an expert, but ...
It looks like the native banana here in South Alabama my wife calls "water bananas" that grows all over. We had several about 10 years ago that were fruiting at about 12-15 feet. I don't know if the fruit was edible as they were all destroyed by the 2 hurricanes (Erin and Opal) we got that year. They are pretty cold-tolerant and always came back after winter.
