we are talking about polyacrylamide or as the retail trade had named it "gel" or "Liquid Earth" .. It don't do well when fertilizer is used . But mainly its way to soft and as the last poster mentioned the support would have to be some kind of a sturdy set up to hold the plant from simply falling over in the gel.. The gel will work as a seed starter on normal seeds ! It like a gardeners best friend you can put you seeds in it a few crystals deep and watch them start to grow! You can see the white roots develop right from the start . Its a great tool to use with kids .. Yup even us full grown kids
Oh yea! Let me add to my statement about the gel not doing well !!!
The sunlight hits the fertilizer in the gel and it makes some of the nicest green slimy alga you can imagine  .. That’s what I was referring to thought id clarify a bit
