There are really hundreds of types of cooking and plantain bananas, in the US, there are still many available, and if you want to avoid buying one on accident, it might be easier to advise what you should buy, instead of what you shouldn't.

What kind of plant are you looking for? Other than being a dessert type (those that are sweet and can be eaten raw), there are other factors to consider such as how much room you have, will it be in the ground or in a container and what type of growing conditions you have.
