Default Canna planted today

Spurred by last winter's success planting a basjoo a foot deeper than usual and it coming back just fine with very little winter mulch, I decided to try the same thing with a canna plant.

My guinea pig test subject cannas, a couple of seedlings that have grown to now 3 feet tall from seeds collected last year from "Intrigue" canna. It has the bronze leaves like its parent. Wish them luck! They did have little tubers in the 3.5" pots when I removed them --about 1" in diameter by about 2" long. I think big enough to be good test subjects. And cheap enough, they were free!

I dug a hole approx 1 foot deep with post hole diggers and plunked the plants down to the bottom of the hole and then put the soil back and gave them a drink. We'll see if they come back--or not--next spring! They are mulched with 1/2 inch of wood chip mulch in that flowerbed.
