If the mercury tube inside the center of the bulb, isn't perfectly white - it's a used bulb. If it's black or grey, it is not new.


For example...


See how the tube in my bulb is only white a quarter of the way up?...






This is a bulb that's been used for 4 months - needs replacing as far as I am concerned. The tube should be solidly white when it's new.
